What Is Linen?

Linen textile is woven from linen yarns. Different from fiber and cotton which have smooth surfaces, its surface is uneven. This particular feature has been utilized by the painter who uses it as canvas and paints on it. Linen is the second most durable textile only next to synthetic fiber. Its strength is so high that it is not easy to be torn up or pierced through. Therefore, you can use a palette knife to press or scrape on it.

Some types of linen are made from single-ply yarns and some with double-ply yarns, so the thickness and texture of linen are various. For the linen with thick texture, you can use a big brush or a big knife to paint on it. The linen with moderate texture is smooth, so it can express the technique of the realistic painting style such as rubbing and dying vividly. Meanwhile, the linen with fine texture can be used to paint the small size painting.

Linen usually grows best in the gloomy and humid environment. The main places which produce linen are Belgium and Ireland. After linen is ripe, it will be reaped wholly and left alone to be rotten away from the root to the leaves, and then the remained fiber is woven into fabric. Because the texture and thickness of linen are different, the width of linen varies, ranging from one meter to three meters.

The price for the pure linen is very high. On the market, you can see many products which are made of semi-linen or made of cotton and linen blended fabrics.

Then how can we distinguish between them? The following are some good ways:

1 Check if the thickness of the yarn is equal by seeing it through a light. If it is equal, it may be cotton textile.

2 Tension the fabric and check if the texture is firm enough.

3 The original high quality linen is brown and lustrous. Moreover, it can absorb water evenly, but the bad quality linen can't absorb water evenly and it will turn black after being wetted.

4 If it is the worsted linen, the less villi you can see on its surface the better it is.

5 Pull out a thread and check. If it bends or branches on both ends, it must be cotton yarn. The torn linen yarn should be smooth on both ends.

6 You can also paint some chlorine water on the fabric to check. If it is linen, it will turn brown, while cotton will turn light yellow.
